Diet & Exercise
One of the most effective ways to lose a double chin is to make sure that your diet and exercise practices are in line with your goals. It's a simple truth that the more fat you have in your body, the greater the likelihood of some of it ending up around your neck and chin area to create a build up of fat underneath your chin. Alongside the fat, a poor diet can also lead to extra water being retained in the body which increases swelling and makes the problem a lot worse.
I suggest that you eat a diet that is high in proteins and wholegrain carbohydrates, whilst being low in saturated fats and sugars. Also make sure that you get plenty of cardiovascular exercise to boost your metabolism and burn fat. This can be done through something as simple as walking, running or cycling.
Hiding a Double Chin
There are some situations in which your double chin may not be all that bad, but you don't want it to be noticeable. Whilst our recommendation is working on getting rid of your chin fat no matter how noticeable it is, there are some options that you can chose to cover it up whilst you reduce it.
For men, consider growing a beard. It sounds extremely simple, and is to some degree. However, properly groomed and professional looking facial hair can be a fantastic way to hide a double chin. Women of course do not have this option, however certain hairstyles can be adopted to your benefit.
Hairstyles that curl underneath the jaw are perfect, since they help to create the appearance of a longer face. In turn, this aids in lessening the effect of a double chin.
Cosmetic Surgery
I should make it clear that this is something that I see very much as a 'last resort' that should only be used if all other methods have been exhausted with no real success.
Fortunately, if you do feel the need to pursue this option, years of development in cosmetic surgery techniques have made the procedures involved a lot simpler and low impact. The common categories of procedure for getting rid of a double chin are as follows:
Mentoplasty
Lipodissolve
Tumescent Liposuction (otherwise known as liposculpture)
I'll now take a quick look at what each of the surgeries involves.
Mentoplasty involves the use of a surgical chin implant in order to make the lower jaw protrude further. The result of this is to create a more pronounced facial profile, particularly around the jaw lines and chin. This helps to minimize the appearance of a double chin, and has the added bonus of tightening the muscles around the chin and lower neck, which also reduces the appearance of the double chin-creating fat.
Local anaesthetic is typically applied during this procedure. Sometimes, liposuction may also be used in order to effectively remove the double chin for good by removing excess fat in addition to creating a more defined jaw.
Lipodissolve is perhaps unique among the surgeries for getting rid of a double chin, since it is non-surgical. Instead, a series of chemical compounds are injected into the double chin, which work on melting away the fat and flushing it through the body via normal bodily functions. Care should be taken with this procedure since there is no FDA regulated mixture for the chemicals, which instead vary from doctor to doctor.
Tumescent Liposuction is a more traditional surgical alternative to Lipodissolve. A small incision is made in the desired area, and a chemical combination is used to swell and dislodge the fat cells. When dislodged, the fat cells can be flushed through the body. The benefits of this type of surgery are that it is usually extremely effective and low impact, requiring only local anesthetic to perform. However, this is typically the most expensive surgical procedure for removing a double chin.
I hope that this article has been valuable in getting you on the path to get rid of double chin problems that you may be suffering from.
