There have been about 4 times today where I had to check the calendar because I 1) can’t believe it’s June; and 2) I couldn’t remember what day of the week it was. I’ve been in a bit of a whirl the past couple of weeks and feel like I’m finally getting dumped out of the vortex of insanity.
A couple of weeks ago, I got to spend some time in New York City (one of my favorite places) with my friends at Gwynnie Bee. (Disclosure: client) I fell in love with these hangers at The Ace Hotel, where an event was taking place. If you are ever looking for a great place to stay in NYC, that was an awesome hotel. Plus, there’s a Stumptown Coffee in the lobby! I’ve only enjoyed Stumptown in Portland before.
I wasn’t feeling so hot towards the tail end of the trip, but thought I just had allergies and a sore throat. Made it to my doctor for antibiotics and thought I’d be good to go. Over Memorial Day weekend though, things went from bad to worse as I had a tonsil that kept growing in size. Several panicked phone calls to ENTs got me an appointment where I learned I had an abscess on my tonsil. I didn’t even know such nastiness existed! But he said it’s not super uncommon and there’s nothing in particular that causes it. Some draining and slashing and extremely painful nastiness ensued, and I was sent on my way.
A day after my abscess awesomeness, I flew out to Denver on Thursday for a meeting with my friends at ENELL (Disclosure: client). I wasn’t feeling well on the flight out, but thought it might just be recovery from the slasher moves they made on my throat. I realized I was sitting across from Phillip Phillips on the plane but was so tired and groggy (I don’t do mornings) that I think I threw him an insane amount shade (stupid bitchy resting face) as he got up and got his guitar from the overhead compartment. I wasn’t meaning to throw shade as I genuinely like his music, but it was one of those “Is it him? Maybe not him? Damnit, I’m tired and don’t really care? But is it him?” Yeah, it was, and I stared at him like a crazy confused person and he stared back at me genuinely confused at my face. Meh.
Denver weather was moody! And so was my throat. By the end of the day, I couldn’t really swallow or talk. My awesome friend Brandi and her colleagues at Clover Partners were so nice as I basically was a grumpy, sickly mute.
The next morning, I realized something was really wrong, and ended up moving up my flight several hours to get home to go to the ER instead of exploring a little bit of Denver. I’ll be back there in a few weeks anyway for Fitbloggin – yay!
Thankfully the flights were uneventful and even though I couldn’t swallow, eat, or drink, I made it to the hospital at home where my awesome friend Lizzie was waiting for me.
They initially thought I had mono that wasn’t responding to my antibiotics, which would have sucked. But as they did bloodwork for that, I kept thinking how well I felt other than my throat. Energy was good, stamina was up, no fever, etc. So I wasn’t shocked when it came back negative.
They gave me saline, penicillin, steroids, and pain killer for a while through the IV, and then was sent home on a cocktail of penicillin and steroids. Lizzie ran to the store for some liquids that I could try to consume, and I ended up falling asleep sitting upright with a mug of chicken broth that I spilled on myself. Whoops. The next morning I felt so much better. I could swallow liquids easily and could talk. It was crazy.
So fingers crossed everything is all clear when I go back for a follow up Friday. They warned of taking my tonsils out, but said if this cleared up and didn’t come back it should be fine to keep them.
I have so much I want to write about, but it will have to wait until I can figure out what day of the week it is!!! Need to work on this whole push and pull thing.
Hope you’re all well.
