TRX for Runners: Benefits and a Workout

Over the last month I’ve shared a few videos using the TRX to get more strength and core training in my routine. I wanted to get someone who has been using it for ages involved to explain why it’s great for runners and show you some moves.  Thanks Paige {umm my abs idol}.

If you’re an avid reader of Amanda’s blog here (and I’m assuming you are, since you’re reading this right now!) you likely have an appreciation for running, too. In fact, I’d even wager that for many of you, it’s your primary form of exercise – which is great!

That said, just as it’s important for me to include cardiovascular exercise into my fitness regime, it’s also importance for runners and endurance athletes to include strength training into their routine.
Benefits of TRX Training for Runners and a Workout to get started

Strength training can not only reduce the risk of injury in endurance athletes, but also improve performance in your running. In fact, According to a study published in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science, strength training programs improved the following in a group of an endurance athletes:

  • Endurance performance
  • Gains in maximal strength
  • Production of force
  • Neuromuscular function

All that mumbo jumbo to say that implementing a safe and effective strength training program to complement your running can help you become a better runner. TRX WORKOUT

One of my favorite forms of strength training for runners is the TRX. Now, I love using TRX for nearly all of my clients, but it’s especially great for runners for a few reasons:

  • It can improve mobility in the hips and ankles – trouble spots for many runners
  • It gets you moving in multi-plane movements, whereas while running, you’re typically in the frontal plane the entire time
  • It emphasizes unilateral training, which helps with muscle imbalances
  • It improves stability

I’ve created a TRX workout specifically for runners that I wanted to share with you all today!

If you don’t have a TRX directly accessible to you, ask the manager of your gym if you can use one of the trainers or group fitness instructors {Amanda’s note: remember my playground swing!}. Hi there! I’m Paige – better known as TrainerPaige across the interwebz, and as you might have guessed, I’m a personal trainer. Lifting weights is my main passion when it comes to fitness, but I also know the importance of having both cardiovascular strength and endurance.

I’m also an avid hiker and trail runner, and like to cross 14ers – 14,000+ foot high mountains off my list, so I supplement my lifting workouts with both running and cycling.
